I totally agree. The journey is the destination. Years ago, I worked for Dr. Elayn Bernay and studied with Dr. Rachel Lauer at Pace University. They both taught this -- that we have to love the pursuit. Thanks for your reminder -- to pause while we journey up the hill, look around and enjoy the view.

Thank you, Dean Hermann, for your comments on critical thinking, a skill that instructors should consider paramount. I especially appreciated your point that critical thinking "means examining what you are doing, why you are doing it, and whether you should be doing it or making a change. It is about looking at what you value, considering its impact on others, and deciding how to move forward—sometimes it is also about changing what you think because you have a deeper understanding of the world."

Too much of what has passed off as "liberal" education has, sadly, been the complete opposite in the hands of those who permit only one point of view in the classroom--their own, without engaging students in the rigorous examination of perspectives that has been the hallmark of true liberal education.

It is a joy to find kindred spirits at Pace who care about this type of engagement and encourage their students to develop critical-thinking skills that can prepare them to deal with all that life in the 21st-century might bring their way. Thank you again for your sensitive comments.
